Exterior
Exterior and façade design
The façade is the first thing anyone sees and the last thing anyone touches. It is decided early: volume, the proportion of openings, materials that stand up to rain and sun.
The garden is not what is left over after the house. Paths, fencing, ground levels and lighting are drawn together with it, otherwise they are repaired expensively afterwards.
What matters in this kind of space
- 01
Volume and openings
The proportion of window to wall, the eaves, the setbacks. This is where a house either looks settled or improvised.
- 02
Finishes
Renders, cladding, joinery. Chosen for exposure and upkeep, not only for colour in a render.
- 03
Architectural lighting
Light on the façade and on the paths: what is brought forward in the evening and what stays in shadow.
- 04
The junction with the ground
Paths, fencing, levels and drainage. The part that does not show in photographs but decides whether it works.
